Rocket vs ECM: Which Espresso Machine Should You Buy?

Rocket vs ECM: Which Espresso Machine Should You Buy?

Rocket Espresso and ECM are two of the best names in home espresso: Rocket out of Milan, ECM out of Germany. If you've narrowed it down to these two, you really can't go wrong. The choice mostly comes down to which model fits your budget and your bench, and which look you prefer.

What they've got in common

Both are built to commercial standards and made to last for decades. Both run the classic E61 group head, have plenty of steam power for milk, and come in models with either a vibration or rotary pump, and either a heat exchange or dual boiler setup. Both are easy to service long term, and we service Rocket Espresso right here in Melbourne.

Where ECM fits in

Here's the easy way to think about it: ECM tends to slot in between the Rocket models. Line everything up by price and the two brands interleave, so ECM often fills the gaps between one Rocket and the next, both on price and on features. This is how it looks from entry level up (tap any machine for today's price):

Machine Brand Boiler Approx. price
Classika PID ECM Heat exchange ~$2,700
Appartamento Rocket Heat exchange ~$3,400
Mechanika Slim ECM Heat exchange ~$3,700
Giotto / Mozzafiato Rocket Heat exchange ~$4,000 to $4,700
Elektronika II ECM Heat exchange ~$4,900
Giotto / Mozzafiato FAST R Rocket Heat exchange ~$5,300
R58 Cinquantotto Rocket Dual boiler ~$5,700
Synchronika ECM Dual boiler ~$5,850
Bicocca Rocket Dual boiler ~$8,500
R NINE ONE Rocket Dual boiler ~$11,900

(ECM also does a Synchronika AMG edition that comes with a matched grinder, if you'd rather buy the pair together.)

Heat exchange vs dual boiler

A heat exchange machine lets you brew and steam at the same time off a single boiler. It's plenty for most homes and the best value. A dual boiler runs separate boilers for brewing and steaming, which gives you independent, more precise temperature control. Handy if you make a lot of milk drinks or several in a row.

Vibration vs rotary pump

Vibration pumps are the standard and do a great job. Rotary pumps are quieter and can be plumbed straight to a water line, which is worth it if the machine sits in an open-plan kitchen or you'd rather run it off the mains.

The new FAST R models

Worth flagging: Rocket's newest Giotto and Mozzafiato FAST R editions add a rapid heat-up, so you're not waiting as long in the morning for the machine to come up to temperature. If a quick warm-up matters to you, they're well worth a look.

So which one?

  • Go Rocket if you love the Italian styling and want the full ladder, from the entry Appartamento right up to the flagship R NINE ONE, plus in-house Melbourne servicing.
  • Go ECM if you prefer the cleaner German look, or you want to land right in one of those gaps between two Rockets on price or features. The Synchronika in particular is a benchmark dual boiler.

Honestly, both are excellent. If you can, pop in and see them side by side.

Whichever way you go, pair it with a good grinder. It's half the shot.
